Chapter 11

INDIE

A brisk breeze rushed down from the mountains, stirring clumps of grassy weeds that had grown up around the building and making Indie’s eyes water as Monte and his guards escorted her outside. On trial for genocide? They couldn’t still blame her a year later. And if they found her guilty…Indie shuddered to think of it. Would they keep her prisoner? They could easily confine her inside the massive concrete complex and lose her forever. Another mouth to feed. She’d be forgotten. Would Monte really allow her to die?

Would they let her go if they found her not guilty? Her brother wouldn’t allow that either. No, these people could very well kill her. Just live through this. Live and go back to the farm. Find her men, no matter what had become of them.

Options! Austin’s familiar command rang in her head as she blinked and wiped tears from her lashes. Escape. As soon as possible. She had no other option. But how? A chain-link fence, at least ten feet high, surrounded what used to be the loading docks. Monte and his people had reinforced it with corrugated metal and scraps of wood. A ladder led up to a platform around the top where one slow guard patrolled. She’d have to create a distraction and get to the ladder before anyone caught her, then jump. A fall from that height probably wouldn’t kill her, but a broken leg would be worth the risk, especially if the trial went bad.

Monte’s people gathered at a cluster of dry-rotting picnic tables, drinking bottles of beer ranging in color from sunny gold to rich amber, and growing restless as she approached. A woman brought out a pitcher filled with a dark, almost black liquid that sloshed red at the edges as she walked toward the picnic table placed in the center of the overgrown driveway. She set it beside a hammer and backed away. No one touched it, although several people cast a wary gaze in its direction then shot a hateful glare toward Indie. Not beer. Her irrational mind rejected the obvious conclusion.

A man several years older than Monte sat at the center table. He picked up the hammer and rapped it on the wood, sending a thudding crack echoing inside the fence. “Dr. Indiana Jones, approach the bench.”

The crowd erupted at her name, booing and chanting one word, drawing out both syllables to make it even more ominous. “In-fect! In-fect! In-fect!”

What could that possibly mean? Are they infected? Indie glanced around, but the people closest to her all appeared to be healthy under the dirt and exhaustion that covered their gaunt faces.

Monte stood in front of the table and cupped his hands around his mouth. “Court is in session!”

Half a dozen armed men stepped forward to hold the crowd back. The rowdy onlookers settled somewhat, tossing their empty bottles on the weedy lawn and opening another round.

“The Honorable Judge Woodson, presiding.” Monte stepped aside, and Indie wondered if the man really had been a judge or if Monte pulled his strings.
