Chapter Thirteen

Riker and I made our way to the bridge, where the Captain stood by the wheel, sipping his coffee. Through the windows, I could see the lights of the cutter Abendera keeping a wide berth from us just off the port bow.

“What’s the status, Captain?”

“I gave them all the information I had. They’re going to continue searching the waters while we head back to Milwaukee. Nothing else, unless you have anything you’re not telling me.”

I shook my head. “No, that covers it. Again, my apologies for keeping you in the dark. What time do you think we’ll reach port?”

He glanced at a clock on the wall. “Best guess about seven. The wind seems to be dying down and the lake is calming. We’ll be under way shortly. The Coast Guard said they will have a police car meet us at the pier.”

“Right. Well, we might as well pack our things and see if we can get an hour or two’s rest, then.”

“Might as well. I sent Willy back to bed a while ago. I’ll stay up here until we reach port.”

Riker and I went below deck. At the top of the stairs, he paused. “Not exactly the way we expected this to turn out, is it, Detective?”

“No, not exactly, Riker.”

“I’m sorry about what happened. I mean with Slavinsky and everything. I was out of bounds.”

“Not your fault, Riker.”

“Not yours either, Detective. You did everything right. You made all the right calls.”

“I wish I could be as sure. And it is my fault. I was in charge.”

“You still are, sir. You’re a fine detective.”

“Thanks. Get some rest. I’ll try and do the same.”

Riker nodded. “Right. See you in a few hours.” I watched him as he went down the stairs to the crew quarters. When he was gone, I made my way back to cabin four. Alone with my thoughts, my head ached. I replayed the night’s events again in my mind as I packed my belongings and at last stretched out on the bunk and closed my eyes.
