After the game, I gave Sierra a hug and twenty bucks, as Creole was taking her to a movie, and they went off, leaving me with James.

“Let me walk you to your car,” he said.

I didn’t protest, because I knew if I did, he would walk me, anyway. As we walked, I debated whether to tell him about what his brother had done. I decided to leave it alone. I didn’t want to get into a big discussion when I had somewhere to be.

“You look nice, Allure. Those colors look really pretty on you. I don’t remember you ever wearing much pink when we were together.”

“I was in denial. Too embarrassed to admit that this girly color was my favorite.”

He chuckled.

When we made it to my car, I was hoping he walked his ass on away, but of course he didn’t.

“You going somewhere special tonight?”

“A friend’s dinner party.”

“Who?” he asked bluntly.

“James, you know that’s none of your business,” I said firmly.

“I know. . . . It’s just that I . . .” His eyes traveled up and down my body.

I softened my voice. “Just let me go, okay?”

He looked away and nodded. “Bye.”

I waved, then turned to get in my car. He stood there, watching me, even after I started up the car and backed out and drove forward. I could still see him standing there when I exited the parking lot. It was killing him to know about my love life.
