Chapter 19
"WHERE WERE YOU LAST NIGHT?"
The two detectives who showed up at my door the next morning were cold and distant. I invited them in and offered to brew up some coffee. They came in but declined my offer.
"What time?"
"Start from 3 p.m."
"I was at my desk until 4:30. Then I met Assistant Deputy Diane Anderson at Ground Under at around five. My partner, Zoey, was there, too." They looked at each other.
"Then we went home, had dinner, and stayed in all night."
"Was Zoey with you all night?"
"Yes. What's this about?"
"Diane is dead," said the taller one, glancing at his partner as if to signal that he would take the lead in this interview.
I sat there in shock for a second. "And you think I had something to do with this?"
"You are a person of interest."
"Where's Nate?"
"He's not in on this, and he can't help you here."
"But he knows what's going on. What happened to Diane?"
"Let's go down to the station and talk about it. Where can we find Zoey?"
"She went into work to catch up on her research."
"Where?"
"At Duluth University, Psychology Department." My interrogator looked at his partner again, but I couldn't fathom the mental signals he was sending this time. On the way to the station, he called another detective, giving Zoey's location.
When we got to the station, they sat me in an interrogation room and left me there for half an hour. I knew they were watching me from outside the one-way mirror.
Sending telepathic thoughts to Zoey to stay calm, I reassured myself that this would obviously work out. How could they seriously think that I had something to do with Diane's death?
Once they finally came into the room, one of the detectives offered me a cup of bad coffee, which I gladly accepted, and then they grilled me at length about my history with Diane. I filled them in up to the present time, including my suspicion that Diane had broken into my house.
When it became clear that they still thought I was involved, I invoked my Fifth Amendment rights and asked to speak to a lawyer. This cemented their stance about my guilt, and they left the room again.
A few minutes later, they offered me a phone call, which I promptly placed to my friend Linda at the County Attorney's office. I got her voice mail.
"Linda, it's me, Jo. I'm at the DPD being questioned in a murder investigation. I've requested an attorney. I know you can't represent me, but I need you to contact the best criminal lawyer you know and send him down here ASAP. I didn't do this, but they're intent on believing I did."
After an hour and another two cups of bad coffee, Rena Waters walked in. Shocked to see a public defender, I also knew that Linda wouldn't steer me wrong. If anyone would know the best criminal lawyer in Duluth, it would be the Chief Prosecutor.
She shook my hand, sat down, and asked me what I had told the police.
