Aisley was in a hurry to get to the great chamber. She did not wish to be late, she told herself, although she suspected the rapid pulsing of her heart was due to other reasons entirely. Would her husband greet her pleasantly? Throw her down among the rushes? Take her to his bed, where she would find wild passion and gentle rapport—until he tired of her presence? Aisley was not sure what to long for as she entered Piers's room.

"My lady," he said, and Aisley sat down quickly.

"Piers," she acknowledged, a bit breathlessly. Then she reached for her cup. The ale was warm and sweet this evening, but her throat was dry from her nervous anticipation, so she drank deeply.

"The day has been long without you, my wife," Piers said softly, his tone low and melodious.

Aisley blushed even as she felt her body respond to his voice. It was a like a caress, reaching across the table to her, robbing her of her breath and of her good sense. But she would not succumb tonight without a bit of resistance, however brief. " 'Twas a long night without you, my husband," she said pointedly.

She heard his chuckle in the darkness and took another swallow of ale to calm herself. Finishing the cup in a gulp, she set the vessel on the table. "The drink is rather poor tonight, is it not?" she asked.

"Is it? I notice naught but you when in your company," Piers said. Aisley smiled at the words, feeling the pull of him like a lure out of the darkness. The refreshment had eased her, as had Piers's obviously good mood. Despite her annoyance with him, she found her thoughts racing ahead to the night that would follow their meal. Would he tear at her clothes or simply leave them on her, growling of his urgent need for her?

Heady with desire, Aisley leaned toward him slowly, but something pushed her back. With a start, she sat up straight on the bench, overcome by an odd, prickly sensation.

"Aisley?" She heard Piers's voice, but it sounded discordant and shrill, and when she tried to move again, it was as if she were caught between opposing forces grappling for her insides. Then her stomach cramped violently and she cried out, slipping to the floor.

"Aisley!" Piers was at her side in a moment, but his touch seemed to burn her flesh, and the darkness of the room weighed her down, smothering her.

"Don't!" Aisley managed to croak between gasps, flailing at him with her arms, and finally, his fingers left her.

"Cecil! " he bellowed, and soon the servant was lifting her with cool, capable hands and carrying her away from her husband, who was muttering curses in a harsh tone. When the chamber door opened, Piers's voice faded away, and the air that met her seemed fresher. Taking great breaths, Aisley clung to Cecil all the way back to her room.

Then she was lying on her own bed, and Edith was there, whispering words of comfort.
