Chapter 13

The next morning, Darcy set out early for his ride. He took a circuitous route around the home farm, ending at a pretty grove of trees near a folly. A long time ago, his aunt had insisted on having the structure added to the property, though she rarely visited it. It had been years since the last time she had driven out this way, preferring to remain close to home.

Before he left Scotland, Darcy had given Elizabeth directions to this place and, just as he expected, by the time he arrived, she was standing on the porch, waiting for him. He observed her excited clapping of hands and the grin on her face with a joy that was unmatched in his experience. Not even finding her again after four long years had come close; that moment had been tinged with the fear that she had stopped loving him or, worse, had married another. This time, Darcy saw his beloved with the full knowledge that she was his forever.

Darcy pulled his mount to a stop beside the small building and leapt off. He heard Elizabeth squeal and dropped the reins, holding out his arms to catch her. She threw herself into his embrace, wrapping her arms around his neck. Darcy staggered back under the force of her motion, but hugged her tightly to him. He set her down and then captured her lips in a deep and passionate kiss.

Many long, breathless minutes later, the couple pulled apart. Their embrace changed from passionate to tender, and they held each other close, murmuring words of love.

“I have missed you,” Elizabeth whispered into Darcy’s coat. “I have never lived through such a long fortnight in my life. I thought you would never arrive!”

Darcy kissed Elizabeth’s bonnet-covered head. “I missed you, as well. And, I agree that it was the longest fortnight I have ever experienced.” He squeezed her form, feeling an unexpected relief at having her molded to his body. He ran his hands up and down her back for a while and then, kissing her head once more, stepped back. His hands slid down her arms to her hands and he grasped them tightly. Looking in her eyes, he caught his breath at the love that shone in her mien. He leaned down to kiss her softly, but forced himself to stop before he did more. Standing upright again, he spoke around the lump of joy that had lodged in his throat. “I brought us a picnic.”

“A picnic? At this time of day?” Elizabeth laughed. “What a lovely idea! Have you a blanket? Where shall we spread it out?”

“It should be here,” Darcy nodded at the building beside them, “inside the folly, if my man followed directions and did not run into trouble.”

“Well then, let us go look.” Elizabeth tucked her hand under Darcy’s elbow and grinned. She allowed him to lead her back up to the porch and around to the folly’s door.

Darcy let go of his Elizabeth’s hand so he could open the latch and push the door.
