At the sound of his voice, Elizabeth’s eyes opened wide. “Mr Darcy! Excuse me—Lord Matlock! My apologies, sir: I had thought—.” Her voice trailed off in momentary confusion as she looked from him to the footman, and then she lifted her head. “Forgive me for not being here to receive you properly, sir—I hope you have not been kept waiting long?”

“Not at all, Lady Matlock,” he replied easily. “May I escort you to the house?”

Elizabeth thanked him and took his arm, but as she turned the depths of her exhaustion became clear. At the first step she stumbled and would have fallen had Darcy not quickly reached around to catch her other arm and steady her.
