CHAPTER 27

Pennsylvania

Emma, Lerenzo, Brandon, Micah, Esther, Antonio, and Habib walk atop the wooded hillsides of Pennsylvania at twilight, keeping their voices low. This time of day is murkier now, and they know from reading Revelation 8 that one-third of the stars, sun, and moon have been darkened, making it difficult to see far into the distance. These woods are like all the others they’ve traveled: partly gray from the trees plagued many months ago, and now darkness clings like death over these hills.

Emma and the others left the camper in the days following Kennisha’s murder when they smelled fallen angels in the woods. They realized it was only a matter of time before they were discovered, so they set out on foot once again in search of a cave or abandoned building of some sort. It has been three days since they last found some wild blueberry bushes and picked them clean. Lerenzo and Micah have tried to kill several rabbits, squirrels, and even a bobcat, but have missed all of them, and although Emma knows they are all getting weak with hunger, no one says a word. Hunger and thirst are a constant part of their lives. “We need to stop and rest,” Emma says, noticing that Habib is struggling as they walk up the hillside.

Lerenzo nods, and Emma and the children sit down, each resting against a tree. “This hill and that one over there plunge into a valley,” Lerenzo says, looking at Emma. “Maybe there’s a stream or waterfall nearby. Stay here with the kids while Brandon and I search a little more.”

Emma nods, and encourages Habib to lay down and rest his head on her lap. In the distance she sees five black bears and prays they won’t come near them. Despite the presence of the bears, she leans back against the tree and closes her eyes. It seems like days since she last slept.

The sound of rustling awakens Emma, and her eyes flash open to see darkness surrounding them. She wonders how long she’s been asleep. “Lerenzo?” she whispers. “Brandon?”

“They aren’t back,” Micah says, barely audible.

The rustling is getting closer, and Emma wonders if it’s the bears. But when she smells the rotten odor of fallen angels, she stops breathing. She stretches in search of Micah’s hand and gives it an urgent squeeze. “Don’t move,” she whispers, praying that the other children will remain asleep. Emma then hears the sound of other hellions in the woods, and she prays that Lerenzo and Brandon are a safe distance from them. Noise that resembles laughter or crying—she can’t tell which—echoes through the woods, and she realizes that women are with the dark beasts. The reverberation of heinous shrieks makes Habib jump up from his sleep, and Emma puts her hand over his mouth to keep him quiet. As the noise escalates, Emma tugs on Micah’s hand. “Wake the kids,” she whispers. “We have to move. Leave everything here. There’s no time to gather it.”

Her heart races and
