Chapter Twelve

Dally fussed the whole time Rowdy carried her upstairs to her room at the B Bar D Ranch. Cornelia helped her change into a nightgown then tucked her in bed.

She awoke to a dark, silent house. It took her a moment to recall what transpired that afternoon. Distraught and slightly disoriented, she fell into a fitful sleep, one filled with dreams of the horse falling on top of her and sliding down the track in the mud.

The next time she opened her eyes, daylight edged around the curtains at the window, but it wasn’t yet full light. Sore and stiff, her throat felt parched. She turned her head to glance at the bedroom door, measuring the distance in her mind from her bed to the kitchen. Nik’s admonishment that she remain in bed floated through her mind, but she discarded it. Then she noticed a glass of water on the small table next to the bed and decided Cornelia was an angel.

She sat up and took a deep drink, slaking her thirst. When the glass was empty, she set it on the table and scooted back down in bed.

Eyelids heavy, she drifted asleep only to awaken hours later with a pressing need to use the facilities down the hall.

“Confounded, idiotic, goldurned botheration!” Dally fumed as she struggled to get out bed. The weight of the cast threw her off balance and she couldn’t quite gain her equilibrium. The warning from Nik to stay off her foot became a vague niggling in the back of her head she chose to ignore.

Determined to make her way to the bathroom unassisted, Dally sat on the edge of the bed, waiting for the spinning in her head to stop.

Four long, deep breaths later, the world settled back into place and she gripped the edge of the mattress, intent on her goal.

She pushed up on her good leg and took just one step before she crumpled to the floor. Pain shot up her leg and a cry ripped from her throat before she could clamp her lips together to contain it.

The drumbeat of pounding footsteps began on the stairs and echoed down the hall. Her bedroom door swung open and she glanced up into Nik Nash’s concerned face.

“What are you doing?” he asked in a sharp, clipped tone, hurrying to her side.

“I just needed to…” She snapped her mouth closed, not about to tell him where she’d been headed.

“What part of ‘you must stay in bed and off that leg’ didn’t you understand?” He helped her sit upright as he glowered at her.

“I… I… um…” With Nik close enough she could see tiny flecks of gold glimmering in his rich, dark eyes, she couldn’t remember where she’d been headed. At the moment, she was hard-pressed to recall her name. His presence at her side warmed her more than the cozy blankets on her bed as he placed a hand on her forehead and checked for a fever.

Although she didn’t have one, she felt inexplicably warm as he brushed against her.
