July 5
Unchain Yourself from the Desk
They intoxicate themselves with work so
they won’t see how they really are.
—Aldous Huxley
Every year July fifth marks National Workaholics Day—dedicated to workers chained to their desks. You know the ones (maybe you’re one). They start early, skip lunch, and stay late writing around the clock. Work takes top priority over everything else in life: family relationships, play, important social events, and self-care.
How many scribes among us use writing as an escape at the expense of a healthy work-life balance? If that sounds like you, today is a time to step back and take it easy. Consider taking an afternoon nap, read a book for fun, or spend some time watching videos on YouTube. Your writing will be waiting for you at your computer tomorrow.
For those of us who aren’t workaholics, today is an opportunity to celebrate the workaholics in our lives and recognize all they have accomplished. To celebrate National Workaholics Day, we can arrive at our writing stations a little earlier than usual and tackle the writing project we’ve been avoiding. Which side of the coin are you on?
Today’s Takeaway
If you’re a workaholic, ask what you’re using your writing to escape from; if you’re not a workaholic, ask if you’ve avoided working on a writing project that needs your attention.
