What are the downsides to this fire? Well, to be honest, there can be a couple, depending on your circumstances. Sometimes the ground might be too hard, if it’s frozen, or full of rocks or roots; it might even be too wet to dig down into to create a hole. You might also not have a spade to hand, which will make digging a fire hole pretty tricky. Holes can be dug using a stick or rocks, but this is hard work and very time consuming. As a challenge for kids, though, and if time is not an issue, it could be an even greater adventure, so give it a go.

If you need a fire to really warm yourselves on a cold day then this method probably isn’t for you. It’s absolutely brilliant for cooking on, but for heating people up, it’s not great. You need to be very close to it – or even right on top of it – to really get much warmth, as most of the heat is contained underground and shoots directly upwards.

Although it’s a little more hard work than a normal fire, it’s more efficient, so will require less fuel. This means fewer foraging trips for firewood, so the initial outlay of effort with the digging is offset later. Everyone should try making one – digging together, cooking together, having fun together over the awesome Dakota fire hole!
