Driving in New Zealand is comparatively easy because traffic is light outside the major cities. New Zealand city traffic is relatively orderly. Every now and again, there are articles or readers’ letters in the local newspapers deploring the fact that New Zealand drivers are terrible compared with drivers in other parts of the world. Of course, there are some terrible drivers in New Zealand, but as far as I can see, they are in about the same proportions as elsewhere. It is true that they tend to lack experience with driving in heavy traffic, but how can they get that experience when normal traffic is simply not heavy!

If you intend to drive a car in New Zealand (and you will see from the rest of this section, it is almost a necessity if you want to get around), I would suggest that you consider joining the Automobile Association (AA). They not only provide a breakdown service, they also will, for a small fee, inspect any car you intend to buy, and supply you with good maps, accommodation guides and itineraries when you want to drive around the country.

If you buy a car, it is very important that you also get car insurance. If you are not insured and have a crash, you may be liable for all costs and risk having to pay large amounts of money. So getting insurance is a wise precaution. Insurance companies are listed in the Yellow Pages of the telephone directory, and they will be able to advise you on different types of cover and costs.
