Chapter 7

Careers in Academia: The Academic Job Application Process and Beyond

Before discussing the state of the academy in the United States, I’d like to preface the chapter with a comment about the state of equal opportunity and equitable treatment of culturally diverse scholars in U.S. academia. Although the sources referenced in this chapter unanimously deplore the small number of faculty of Asian cultural background, and the fact that Asians tend to hold the lowest ranking positions, I must acknowledge that et ceteris paribus, the United States is a nation based on sound principles of equality. Although there do exist problems in practicing these principles, even the fact that these principles exist, and that they are at the core of legal, political, and educational discourse is heartening to me as a minority in this nation. Based on my experience and conversations with other minority scholars, compared to other nations, U.S. academia can be considered to be relatively accepting of scholars from different cultural backgrounds. That is not to say that U.S. academia is not without problems in the area of openness and equitable opportunities for scholars of diverse cultural backgrounds. I have personally experienced my share of inequitable treatment and bias while in U.S. academia. But I did want to balance out the criticisms with an acknowledgement of its principles, and commitment to those principles, for the most part.
