1 The coining of the term ‘culture shock’ is generally attributed to the Finnish-Canadian anthropologist Kalervo Oberg, who used it in a 1954 lecture when describing the four stages of adaptation to a new culture (the honeymoon phase, culture shock, recovery and adjustment). See Oberg, 1954. According to Wilson and Dalton the most important of the Big Five characteristics are conscientiousness (as rated by their home-country boss) and agreeableness (as rated by their host-country boss).

Employers considering sending someone on an expatriate assignment should therefore think about the individual’s possible personality profile, and they may even want to consider asking them to complete some form of personality assessment. If someone does seem to have a personality type that would make adapting to life in a different culture more difficult, it would be a good idea to consider whether or not they would benefit from some pre-departure training or, in more extreme cases, whether or not that person should go on the assignment at all.
