1. Doc Carver confirms Johnson’s friendship with Phillips (Carver mss., p. 17): “I ran into a fellow at Fort McPherson who had been an Indian scout in the north; his name was Phillips. He was to guide a detachment of soldiers up the trail to a northern fort. We asked him about the buffalo herds in Wyoming, and he said he had never seen such big herds. He said he had killed buffalo for the army post [probably Laramie] and that Liver-Eating Johnson and some other hunters had gone with him.”
