Emma bit back a smile as she retrieved her things from the van and then walked to Isaac’s buggy.

She’d never seen him look so surprised. She wondered if he’d given up on her ever wanting to talk to him. Once upon a time she’d been upset enough to want him to be as hurt as she had been, but she hoped she was over it now.

“Danki, Emma,” Mary said. “Tell Isaac thank you again for me, will you? It was so nice of him to take me to see Davey.”

“I will.”

She stepped out of the way and watched as the van accelerated onto the road and then found herself looking in Isaac’s direction. He was standing there staring morosely at the broken wheel on the buggy. She made a quick call home to let her mother know what was going on.

When she walked over to Isaac, he looked up and she thought he looked less morose. “How long is it going to take someone to come fix it?”

“Abraham said he’d be here in an hour.” He pulled out his cell phone and looked at the display. “It was a half hour ago.” He sighed. “Do you want to get in the buggy and sit?”

She remembered what happened the last time she sat in the buggy with him. “Nee, this is fine. How is Davey?”

“Looking good. He was moved to a regular room today. Since he could have visitors I took Mary to see him.”

“It was nice of you.”

He shrugged. “I have my moments.”

“True. Unfortunately, you didn’t show many of them lately.”

“Ouch.”

Emma bit her lip. She hadn’t intended to blurt it out. It wasn’t the way she usually talked to him. Her glance went to the wheel, to the way the buggy tilted a little to the right as it sat on the shoulder of the road. It must have been scary to be involved in an accident. Buggies were like cardboard boxes when they came in contact with cars. A whole family had been killed in such an accident last month.

She could have lost Isaac. She could have lost Isaac! She shivered.

“Cold?”

“I’m fine.” She paused for a moment, trying to find the words. “Was Mary scared?”

He nodded.

“You?”

“Surprised was more like it.”

She smiled slightly. “I don’t remember you ever admitting to being scared. Even when the police officer stopped by schul to talk to you about the break-in years ago.”

“I hadn’t done anything, so why should I have been scared?”

“Because you know you could have been accused of so much more so many times.”

He grimaced. “Well, I stopped the behavior once the two of us became interested in each other.”

“True.” She searched his face. “What happened, Isaac? Help me understand why you changed. Why you stopped wanting the things I thought you did.”

“I still want you.”

“Tell me why you want me.”

“This is crazy. What are you talking about? I’ve loved you since we were in schul.”

“But you’ve changed, Isaac. What you want is different now.” She walked a few steps away, then turned and walked back to him.
