WHITE NOISE

The blast of the Q-train rushes in through the glass window

the thick pane holds fast against the onslaught of sound

New York apartments is always happening inside

police/fire/sirens/drivers blowing violent horns of ritual

in Baldwin’s country

survival is to sleep through a crane knocking a hole

in the wall you used to call a view

dirty hands extend up from metal arms

silver teeth unearthing the roots a changing horizon

fat rats be running

rings of garbage and glory round the mesh cans

never enough of them

to house the milk cartons smiling with missing white children

here

I learn to tell you my life story in a play I made up

for real

in a studio

a small sink, a bathroom stall

I write poems on the side of the stove

and pretend to see a world no one else can

this place beckons the bizarre

the screeching, snaking trains, the dark tunnels

the blank faces begging outside the flagged windows

every day is a carnival here

the queer/the quick/the kind dressed in costumes

all of us belly dancing with Beelzebub

everybody brick-hard despite the quandary

of our common conundrum

New York: the place where everything screams loud enough

to create one big white noise
