“If this is not signed by close of business on Monday, I will sign it with a witness and say that you refused to sign.” Seriously? He was threatening me?

According to my contract I was supposed to have had forty-eight hours to obtain union representation before this meeting. However, he held the meeting with no prior warning. I was supposed to have forty-eight hours or two business days to review and respond to a disciplinary letter. He was crazed and not interested in following any of the union rules. My school’s union representative didn’t say anything about these contractual issues. She just sat there. I don’t know if she was afraid because of the level of his anger or if she was just confused about what was going on.

“Okay,” I said. “Did you see the email that I sent you?”

He hadn’t, but read it while I was sitting there.

“I agree with everything here except your statement that the Legal Department said that you may have misunderstood her directive. You, and you alone, said that you misunderstood.”

“And yes, you are removed from the SBST. You are to continue fulfilling you duties as a psychologist in this school. Do you have any mandated counseling cases?”

“No.”

“Well, that’s going to change. And yes, I want you to go home at lunchtime and get the letter. You can go now.”

Ten minutes later, Mr. Brown came to my office and handed me a copy of the Chancellor’s Regulations on reporting suspected child abuse cases.

“Are you familiar with these?”

“Of course I am.” I’m sure I must have rolled my eyes.

He proceeded to go through each step of the regulations and asked if I followed them on the case that I reported, while he noted my answers in pencil.

I did go home and retrieve the letter during my lunch period. I delivered it to Mr. Brown while he was standing in the main office with Mrs. Norwood. I wanted to make sure that they witnessed me giving it to him.

Later, I emailed my union chapter leader and the borough representative for social workers and psychologists, as well as my clinical supervisor about the events that took place. I also emailed my clinical supervisor regarding Mr. Johnson’s plan to isolate me from my assistant. Her response:

My recommendation would be for you to compose a friendly email to your principal stating the reasons as to why it would be best for the school to station your assistant close to you and offer possible solutions that could satisfy all parties involved. Ultimately, however, it is the principal’s decision and I really have no authority to intervene.

Really!? I was so annoyed by that response that I never reached out to her about the situation at the school again. A friendly email to this principal? She had to be kidding me!

I wasn’t really shocked by anything that happened during those two days. What I found ironic and amazing was that my life could have been put in danger due to his behavior and I ended up being punished.
