Jim Donald’s Agenda
Jim was a field-driven, hands-on operating man. He had a track record of being a successful turnaround leader by fixing things that were broken and doing so through people. His relentless drive was to keep on building new stores, adding to the product pipeline and focusing on emerging growth drivers. He focused on how to expand and had ideas that involved the company foraying into music. He was of the view that it was important to do things that were new and in sync with the company’s entrepreneurial culture and spirit. His belief was that success came down to the way the company connected with its customers, communities and farms, and with each other. He was one with Howard’s thought that they are not in the coffee business, serving people; they are in the people business, serving coffee.
He strongly believed that to help gain buy-in, it was necessary to assess the people internally for promotions as opposed to bringing in people from outside. He froze hiring in his very first week. He broadened the responsibilities of the employees and promoted them. This created loyalty from within towards him. He shared his ideas about what was brewing at the coffee colossus—more stores, more positions in the supermarkets, more licensing operations and more innovation. The first and top priority was more stores.
Speaking about the hurdles Starbucks had faced in the past, Jim stated that the largest hurdle to be overcome was the notion that they needed a separate model for each country. He felt that Starbucks just needed to replicate its US success model.
