Asia

The world’s largest continent, Asia covers one-third of Earth’s landmass and contains nearly two-thirds of its population. Its diversity matches its vast size; Asia contains the highest and lowest points in the world and has a climate that ranges from arctic to tropical. The continent features sparsely peopled areas, such as the Gobi Desert, as well as some of the world’s largest cities, including Shanghai, Mumbai and Tokyo.

Many of the world’s first civilizations arose in Asia, notably in Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley and northwestern China. The continent was also the base of some of history’s largest empires

– Persian, Chinese, Arab and Mongol. The world’s most practised religions (Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism) all originated here. For much of human history Asian nations, such as those of India and China, were the most powerful and advanced in the world, although in the 18th and 19th centuries European powers began to surpass them. Recent Asian development has been rapid and the continent may yet resume its former prominence.
