Ramos (2003) writes little about faxinas in his accounts of the experiences of his companions at the prison, besides one story that features a juiz da xadrez preparing a meal at Christmas, and calming a situation when one of his cellmates tells another prisoner he is not invited to eat. In contrast to Rap and Zeni (2002), Ramos (2003) focuses on tensions as well as camaraderie between Carandiru’s inmates. Still, it is the latter that attracts most of his attention. In one notable passage, Ramos describes a quote from a former state justice secretary that had been reproduced and left for many years on the door of a cell. It read:Understand that, compared to the mendigo (tramp), the ladrão is better. The mendigo… is a loser who gave up the fight… Not the ladrão. [He] reacts and takes on society. Risks his liberty and his life. Continues fighting, doesn’t accept his destiny…. (Ramos 2003: 236–237)
