Gavin hung his head, defeated by his past criminal behavior and felony, and he was not alone. Upon first returning to the community, participants’ preferred way to meet their financial needs was with legal employment because the difference between succeeding and failing at reentry is directly related to working in the mainstream economy. Yet, many participants are unable to find stable and legal employment to take care of themselves as they face a number of critical financial responsibilities while attempting to rebuild their lives and support their families, including, in many instances, minor children.
