4.2 Therapeutic Dose of Haemodialysis

Because the concentrations of the substances to be eliminated (e.g., creatinine, urea, potassium) are the same in the outflowing dialysate as in the plasma water, each litre of outflowing dialysate contains the same amount of contaminants that was previously dissolved in one litre of plasma water. Therefore, each litre of effluent dialysate cleared one litre of plasma fluid of its contaminants. The therapeutic dose of haemodialysis is therefore equal to the dialysate outflow (assuming the blood flow is higher than the dialysate flow). As with haemofiltration, the therapeutic dose for haemodialysis should be in the range of 20–30 ml/kg/h.
