Squares of Thai and Burmese ikat silks called mat mee axe juxtaposed in these Cocoon cushions.

Thai silk and Chinese cheongsam toggles lend a subtle sophistication to any sofa. From Cocoon.

Homage to Hemp

Once relegated in the West to making sacks and other utilitarian items, hemp is now holding its own as a beautiful and versatile fabric source for the home. Interior designers and their suppliers are inspired by the Hmong, Karen and Lahu minority tribes in Thailand who for centuries have depended on the durable fibre for homespun items as diverse as aprons, turbans, sashes, money bags, burial clothes and rugs.

The cloth is woven from the katom plant, the leaf of which looks similar to marijuana but is not the same. Some of the mainly women weavers still use a body tension loom with a back strap and foot treadle, meaning that only narrow widths, no wider than the slim waists to which they are anchored, can be produced.

Drawing on ancient natural dyeing techniques, producers such as K Textiles directed by Kachamas Kirathipumtam are using vegetal, mineral and organic matter to create a rainbow of exotic shades: blue from the indigo plant and pineapple leaves; tangerine, mauve and shocking pink from seeds and roots; lilac and brown from vegetables and fruits; green and grey from ashes; brown and magenta from soil and cow dung.

Minute needles are used for intricate embroidery. Apart from traditional animal and plant motifs, each family has its own symbolic design which leads to more variations than the tartans of Scotland and Ireland. With modern applications of hand-woven hemp, a baby's jacket could well inspire an elegant bedspread.
