3.3.4 Memories of Disasters

The third factor was Memories of Disasters, which encompassed statements that broadly asked the participants about their memories of past disasters and their knowledge on future ones. The statements with greater weight in this factor asked participants if they were still traumatized by past disasters, if their community members share lessons on coping with flooding, and whether their community is actively preparing for future disasters. This factor consisted of four elements: local knowledge, governance and leadership, preparedness, and mental outlook. Naming this factor was less straightforward than the others; however, the consistent theme from the statements stemmed more from asking participants about having a memory of a flood rather than about coping strategies or specific knowledge. This factor showed fair internal consistency: the Cronbach alpha (α) was 0.776, and the eigenvalue was 1.355, with item loads ranging from 0.282 to 0.675, but not all statements loaded uniquely, and one statement was below the loading value of 0.4. The statements that loaded onto this factor are provided in Table 3.8.Table 3.8Statements that loaded onto Memories of Disasters, sorted by largest loading value per element
