SUSANNAH THWAITES

This chapter outlines the main concepts of Positive Approach to Care™ (PAC™) and describes how this approach has been used within Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV) to develop communication skills in care-givers. The latter is illustrated using case studies.

OVERVIEW OF POSITIVE APPROACH TO CARE™

Teepa Snow, a dementia specialist in the USA, developed Positive Approach to Care™ (Snow, 2012) to support people living with dementia by equipping both formal and informal carers with specific skills and to increase their understanding of what it is like to live with dementia. Her approach is focused on interactions and care delivery. Two concepts that are central to the use of PAC™ are GEMS™ and the Positive Physical Approach™ (PPA™). GEMS™ is a six-item rating system based on the Allen Cognitive Levels (Allen, 1982), which highlights the strengths of people with dementia (PWD) and guides the nature of interactions required from care-givers to meet PWD’s needs. The Positive Physical Approach™ describes practical steps for engaging and interacting with PWD, taking account of cognitive, sensory and emotional changes.
