A Note from Kara: “A Few Words on Interruption”

At the risk of interrupting this chapter too much, let's take a moment to discuss that persistent bugbear of meetings: interruption. My clients often ask me how to interrupt or get their voices into the room, as well as how to prevent others from interrupting. As long as you're operating respectfully, here are few best practices you might try:

Vocal: From the moment you send your voice into the room, make sure your tone is strong, your volume is “normal” (neither hesitantly quiet nor boorishly loud), and you're starting with the first words of your sentence rather than a filler word or an intro phrase. Content will grab others’ attention more effectively than fillers will—and that goes for your vocal tone as well as the words you use. You can also use a frame to signal how much information you plan to share. If you have two points, say so up front. If interruption has been a particular problem in your group, you can also signal “intent to finish” up front with a phrase like, “I want to make sure I finish two points before we move on in the conversation.”

Physical: Signal readiness to speak with movement. I recommend that my clients move slightly closer or further from the table to draw others’ eyes and give them an opening to speak. As we'll discuss in our upcoming conversation about virtual meetings, if you're dialing in remotely, you can tap the computer with your pen to bring the video focus back to you and create the same effect.
