CHAPTER 7

Adults, Employment and Alcohol

This chapter covers work, worklessness and health and considers the use and abuse of alcohol as one of the critical features of adult wellbeing that affects work and also impinges on many people’s lives.

7.1 Introduction

We have seen that early childhood trauma, poor parenting and social problems such as homelessness all contribute to a cycle of deprivation with long-term consequences. Distressed children grow into distressed or at least usually less competent adults. Whilst it is not true that if you are born poor you remain poor all your life – indeed there are many examples in which the stimulus of a financially poor but (possibly) psychologically rewarding family life leads to aggressively taken opportunities later – nonetheless there is good evidence that economically poorer families have problems later as adults in securing and retaining jobs and the wider benefits of society. It remains true that good early experiences, resources and opportunities offer tangible results in school performance, university attendance and employment opportunities. The present government’s continued attacks on the poorest in society whilst rewarding the richest with tax reductions is at best unhealthy and at worst demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the pressure and possibilities in today’s society. As Wilkinson and Pickett (2009) have shown, increasing economic inequality is directly correlated with increased social inequality and a host of other social problems.

This chapter considers workplace mental and physical health, the benefits and opportunities to be obtained from focusing on workplace arrangements, and some of the problems and solutions of disorders that often (though not invariably) start at work.
