Although quite different in looks and personality, both Elizabeth McCourt (Baby Doe) Tabor and Arabella Huntington were exquisite as young women. While the flirtatious Baby Doe charmed admirers with her high spirits, full figure, golden curls, and sapphire-blue eyes, the more refined Arabella turned heads with a slender, statuesque form, dark hair, enormous brown eyes, and perfect features. Intelligent and ambitious ladies of dubious reputation, both snagged inordinately wealthy Gilded Age giants at least twenty-five years their senior. Since the gentlemen in question (silver king Horace Tabor and railroad baron Collis Huntington) were already married at the time, the ladies were paramours long before they became wives. Although Arabella made the transition from mistress to Mrs. without a social ripple, Baby Doe ignited a national scandal that still smolders more than a century later.

Baby Doe and Arabella followed a similar path up to a point, but their stories had drastically different endings. Arabella Huntington became a social empress and one of the country’s richest women, respected, admired, and even feared in some quarters. An art collector of the highest order, she bequeathed to posterity two great cultural institutions, the Huntington Art Museum and the Huntington Library in southern California. A polar opposite, Baby Doe Tabor lost her fortune, her husband, and eventually her mind while still a relatively young woman. The former silver queen spent her final years alone in a mountain cabin near Leadville, where she froze to death in February 1935. As her legacy, Baby Doe left behind Colorado’s favorite love story, an engrossing tale of passion and betrayal that is the stuff of grand opera and Greek tragedy.
