Structural Clues to Dorsal-Ventral Specialization

Abstract and Keywords

This chapter considers the specific neural mechanisms that differ between dorsal and ventral corticolimbic architectures. These mechanisms, and their anatomical substrates, may explain how neural development takes different forms depending on the relative direction from dorsal and ventral corticolimbic systems. It seems clear that the cybernetics of habituation and redundancy can only operate to shape neural networks that have evolved to respond to their primitive influences. This response involves not only specialized patterns of cortical connectivity, but cytoarchitectonics that are suited to that connectivity, and both thalamic and other subcortical specializations to regulate the specialized cortical networks. By considering these neural mechanisms in detail, this chapter prepares the way for a review of their neuroembryological origins in Chapter 6.
