A couple of nights later, just before we left for Pittsburgh, I spent some quiet time with Tom on the balcony at the condo after dinner and drinks at the Sandbar, just coolin’ out and talkin’ ball, speculating about Demery’s best options. My phone rang.

“Where’s Tom?” It was Dock, with multiple loud voices that sounded like a house party in the background.

“He’s right here, man,” I replied, before Dock went right into it.

“Why are you my go-between? I gave you the motherfucker, and now you’re screening the motherfucker’s calls! I should get a goddamn finder’s fee!” I pulled the receiver from my ear.

“It’s for you,” I said to Tom, who was as puzzled as I was. Heh-heh, God bless the man for trying to have a reasonable conversation with Dock after 1:00 a.m. Tom slowly hung up the phone as Dock was in the middle of screaming some kind of vulgar essay. I threw Tom a “What was that about?” sort of look. Tom just sighed.

“He’s with Corbett.” I knew what that meant, as I poured Tom another Scotch.

I said, “At least he’s with the boss.” Tom nodded, gulping his drink with a slightly troubled expression.

“I guess that’s true.”
