KIPP AND I didn’t get back to my place until after six that night. It was a glorious day with perfect weather. At the movies I gathered the courage to take his hand and hold on to it through the entire flick. It would be a small step for another man, but for me it was huge.

We were saying good-bye when the urge to fuck came over us, and we ended up naked in bed. I fucked him again, going slower and gentler this time.

After we both came, I snuggled on his chest, running my fingers through his chest hair.

“You never did tell me why your day was so bad yesterday,” Kipp said.

“Family shit.” I sighed. “I went to Sacramento to see my parents. I don’t get along with them very well.”

“Not very tolerant?”

I nodded. “Not at all. My sister-in-law, Deb, and her son, Dustin, live there as well. I love my nephew to death and wish I spent more time with him. Next time I’ll avoid my parents and probably have a lot better time.”

“Sister-in-law? So you have a brother? Where is he?”

“California State Prison.”

Kipp sucked in a breath. “Your brother’s an inmate?”

“Yeah, he was a cop, like me and my dad, but unlike us, he was dirty.” I told him about Warren’s descent into illegal activities. “It was hard on all of us, but I think it hit Pop hardest. He had a major heart attack and hasn’t gotten better since.”

“Still unhealthy?”

“Basically he’s got one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.”

Kipp chuckled sympathetically.

“I’m afraid if I were to come out, it would be the last straw.” I hugged him. “I can’t be the one who kills him.”

“You know it wouldn’t be your fault.” He kissed the top of my head.

“Yeah, I know that, but the guilt my mother would give me just isn’t worth it.”

“That sucks, but I understand.”

“Thanks.”

We were both quiet for a moment. “Is that why you’re in Internal Affairs?” he asked. “Because of what your brother did?”

“That’s a big part of it. IAB needs good cops in order to find the bad ones. I know we get a bad reputation, but we’re a necessary evil. It would be worse without us.”

“I never thought of that,” Kipp admitted.

It was nearly midnight before we finally managed to say good-bye and Kipp left. My place suddenly seemed very empty, and I had a difficult time going to sleep without Kipp there. It had been only a couple of nights, but I didn’t like not being with him.
