Chapter Twenty-One

SEEING TOMAS fall and hit on the ground underneath the banyan tree, Marc must have aged a fucking decade. Thank God Tomas’s shoulder is only sprained. When he heard Tomas’s cry, Marc imagined Tomas had had an accident with the saw. Marc has never been so frightened. He can’t bear to see Tomas hurt in any way.

He helps Tomas to his couch, gets him a bag of ice. The humidity is fierce outside as Marc cleans up the rest of the tree and puts away the saw. The wind is blowing, but there’s still a soupy, sticky-hot feeling in the air. He could head to Cole’s and ask Tomas to come, or even ask him to go home with him, but Tomas won’t leave his grandparents’ home unattended. Marc knows this in his gut. Besides, it might be too late and not smart to drive to Ocean Vista at this point. Best to stay put. Fernando has never bothered with a generator—too costly—and Marc hopes Tomas’s house won’t lose power.

As Marc secures the last of the house, he hears a mewing over the burst of wind. The rain is starting. It splatters on his clothes as he follows the sound.

Marc locates the source of the mewing under some brush: a small kitten. Where the mother cat is, God only knows. The kitten, gray like mist, looks healthy, but it is tiny. From the look of it, the kitten has some debris clinging to its tattered fur, but no injuries.

As Marc bends down, the kitten hisses, its eyes round with terror.

“Come on, it’s okay.” Marc reaches out a hand.

The kitten stretches out its claws and crouches low.

“Tough guy, huh?” Marc laughs. “Is that why you’re on your own?” He squats down to the kitten’s level and simply talks to the scared kitty a moment. “Let’s bring you inside, buddy. You’ve no idea how rough it’s about to get out here. We can find your mama later. Tomas would skin me alive if I let you be out in a hurricane.”

The kitten gives him a slow blink.

Marc waits a second longer, then scoops it into his arms before it can get away. “See? You’re gonna be okay with me.”

The kitten seems smart enough to understand. Or at least smart enough to know when it is overpowered.
