MIRRORS

The use of reflective mirrors dramatically extends the scope of clinical photography, allowing the clinician access to all parts of the oral cavity. While standard views are the core elements of photographic records, there are countless opportunities in the dental surgery to document important events in the process of treating patients. In the practice of dentistry, greater visual access to the mouth is gained by the use of a dental hand mirror. In the same way, photographic mirrors broaden the scope of clinical photography. A complete view of the mouth cannot be achieved with direct vision or direct photography. In most cases the photographic mirror will be held in such a way to gain a right-angled view of the occlusal or buccal surfaces of the teeth (Fig 5-1). Occasionally a more angled view can provide more information (Fig 5-2).
