3 Modalities to Assess Myocardial Perfusion

Numerous techniques have been developed for measuring coronary flow and myocardial perfusion in experimental and clinical settings; these include electromagnetic flowmeters, coronary sinus indicator-dilution techniques, velocity probes, inert gas washout analysis, labeled particles administered into the coronary arteries or the left ventricle (radioactive microspheres), and radionuclides trapped in the myocardium. In the clinical setting, only radionuclide imaging is routinely used to assess myocardial perfusion. More recently, new clinically useful techniques such as contrast echocardiography and MR-MPI have become available.
