The Detroit Avenue view of St. Rose Church shows the imposing statue of the church’s namesake. The figure, sculpted by Joseph Motto in Florence, Italy, is 20 feet high and weighs 10 tons.

Here is a closer view of this very impressive statue. St. Rose (1586–1617) was born of Spanish parents who had immigrated to the new colony of Lima, Peru. She was devoted from an early age to a life of prayer and mortification and ultimately took a vow of virginity inspired by “supernatural love.” This view shows the Christian symbols on the backdrop of the statue very clearly.
