Four years after the completion of the African House Murals, Mignon decided the time had come for Hunter to paint another series of plantation murals. He explained his project in a letter to Robert Wilson. Wilson had visited Melrose with his parents when he was a child. He eventually became a famous international stage designer, director, and producer who in 2011 conceived an opera Zinnias: The Life of Clementine Hunter. When Mignon wrote him on June 21, 1957, Wilson was a young man still living at home with his parents in Waco, Texas.

I am rigging up the log cabin, a Negro cabin … I call it Ghana, have remudded the spaces between its legs, put in some crude furniture, planted a little vegetable garden, bordered with zinnias and had the south’s most distinguished primitive artist embellish the rafters, above the beams, with scenes suitable for the neighborhood—the Cotton Crucifixion, the Gourd Harvest, Land of Uncle Tom and Plantation Sabbath. Murals for the Sistine Chapel are one thing but how they are going to pan out for the rafters of a little old Negro cabin, I know not—especially in the absence of one Michael Angelo [sic]. But one does what one can, and, if lucky, has a whale of a lot of fun in the doing.14
