Food combining enhances digestion and increases energy. This chart illustrates poor, fair, and good food combinations.
Another Clean Gut guiding principle involves two separate applications of the 80/20 rule. The first involves reminding oneself to stop eating when one is 80 percent full. Junger explains that this idea comes from the Japanese, who call it Hara Hachi Bu, or âeat until you are eight parts [out of ten] full.â The second application of the 80/20 rule involves filling 80 percent of oneâs plate with vegetables and the remaining 20 percent with good fats and protein, such as chicken, fish, nuts, or avocado. This is an easy, visual way to dish out healthy portions of each food group, as recommended by the USDA and international health organizations.
Supplements play an important role in the Clean Gut program, both to remedy nutritional deficiencies in the gut and to compensate for depleted agricultural soil. The basic supplements recommended in the book are magnesium, fish oil, vitamin D3, probiotics, and a daily multivitamin. Digestive enzymes, prebiotics, hydrochloric acid, L-glutamine, colostrum, lactoferrin, and fermented foods, such as unpasteurized sauerkraut or kimchi, are also on the list.
