The reinterment drive was spearheaded by Charles F. Hopkins. In 1911, Hopkins led the drive to have his former brigade commander, Gen. Philip Kearny, disinterred from his unmarked grave in New York City’s Trinity Churchyard and reburied with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery. Hopkins was successful in his efforts, and General Kearny was reinterred in 1912 in a solemn military ceremony attended by many prominent Civil War veterans. A statue in Kearny’s honor at Arlington National Cemetery is one of only two equestrian statues at Arlington. The statue was dedicated by Pres. Woodrow Wilson in November 1914 and was refurbished in 1996 by the New Jersey nonprofit General Philip Kearny Memorial Committee. When Hopkins died in 1934, he was the last remaining Civil War Medal of Honor recipient in New Jersey. (LOC.)
