THE SPECIAL CASE OF WOMEN

Because women have historically earned lower average incomes than men, and have been less well represented in many high-level occupations, their situation has often been analogized to that of racial and ethnic minorities. But women are not only not a minority statistically (they constitute just over half the population of the United States), their incomes and occupational patterns are also quite different from those of low-income racial and ethnic groups. One of the similarities, however, is that a whole constellation of beliefs about the history and current economic role of women has arisen—a vision that has largely insulated itself from facts.
