The carriage ride on the way to his hotel room thus far had consisted of him asking her questions about her family and how she had come to Washington. She hesitates. It seems far too forward of her to agree to this when there has been only innocent conversation.

Walker pats his lap, indicating Elizabeth is to sit on it. The gesture is oddly sobering.

Unfettered by her indecision, he stretches his legs out and fixes her with a pensive gaze. “We are after the same thing, Mrs. Bennet. Are we not?”

If not for the excess of wine, she might appreciate his frankness. But tonight these words paint for her a detailed and finite canvas of a jail cell. She is there to serve him, she is there to serve the South, and there is very little in between that she has the power to control.

They are both after the same thing, but only one of them has a choice in the matter.

He speaks again and she’s stirred from her reverie. “It must be so lonely here.”

The sentiment seems random, but his words have a significant effect. She is lonely. But what does he know of loneliness?

He watches her intently. What would Minnie gauge from his behavior? Elizabeth feels uneasy and grapples with where she lost control with him. She could always steer the conversation, steer the action, give men the impression that they were making decisions. This time this man was holding the reins. She feels the jail bars closing in, sweat beading on her neck.

Suddenly, Walker’s seriousness breaks and his eyes roam up and down her with a hunger that puts her mind more at ease. If sex is what he wants, she has little to fear. If it is something else, power or pain, it would be what Minnie feared for her.

He leans forward and whispers conspiratorially. “I can’t say I won’t bite. You look delicious.” He sits up straight and pats his lap again.

She slides across the carriage and onto his lap. “I bite back, Major.”

“I was hoping you would.”

His smell is intoxicating. Elizabeth feels a warm rush of desire course through her. She gasps as he plants a firm bite on her neck. He steadies her with one hand, and lets the other roam down her leg. The biting, caressing, and suckling of her skin continues as he lifts up her skirts and parts her legs. She protests breathlessly in a desperate attempt to not appear as wanton as she feels, but his deft fingers reach their goal before she can stop him.

There’s a split second where she considers how she can fall into this, so completely, and so instantly. This is for me, she thinks. I get what I want out of this. It is not his pleasure, but mine. There’s a pounding between her legs that only his touch will calm, a hunger in her that only he will satiate. She clings to his shoulders, crying out when his fingers rub up and down, gasping when he slides two fingers inside her, warm and wet.
