Josh arranged quarters for Angel in a room that had once been occupied by the fort commander’s wife. All that remained was an old iron bed, a scarred wooden dresser, a table, and two chairs, but there was a fireplace in one corner to keep the place warm, and it wasn’t far from his own quarters, so he could keep an eye on her.

It probably wasn’t necessary, he thought as he returned to his own room and readied himself for bed. There weren’t that many men at the fort. The officers were all first rate and discipline had never been a problem. Still, since he’d stumbled onto the Confederates who had tried to rape her, he couldn’t stand the thought of her being too far away.

He had always been protective of women. As a man raised in the South, it was simply his way. Still, his concern for Angel went beyond Southern manners. He hadn’t realized how possessive—how wildly protective—he felt toward Angel until he had seen her with those men.

He hadn’t lied to her. He could have strangled every man-jack sonofabitch with his own bare hands.

He understood their wanting her. He wanted her that same way, had since the moment he had seen her in Whistler’s Dry Goods. But now he realized his feelings went way beyond that. He didn’t want another man touching her. He would kill to keep anyone from hurting her.

The thought was unsettling, particularly since his plans for the future did not include Angel Summers. Sarah Wingate was the woman he would marry. He had abandoned the South, given up his birthright when he had joined the Union Army. He was no longer welcome here. He had no choice but to make the North his home. Josh sighed as he pulled back the covers and climbed naked into bed. Just thinking of Angel made him hard, and he only had a few hours to sleep before he had to spell Silas Medford in the ward. He tried to fall asleep, but tossed and turned instead. Finally he got up, dressed, and went back to the hospital. What he didn’t expect to find in the barracks this time of the night was Angel Summers.
