Chapter Twenty-One

Christina’s heartbeat roared in her ears. Surely the other two heard its pounding. What sort of plan rattled around in Noah’s brain? Completely dumbfounded, she could only stare at him. From the corner of her eye, she could see that Jill’s reaction mimicked her own.

Noah cleared his throat. “Did you hear that Bishop Micah’s younger schweschder, Eleanore, had been admitted to the hospital?”

Christina nodded. “I heard that. She had complications with her diabetes, I think.” What did the bishop’s schweschder have to do with their dilemma? Christina hoped she didn’t look as stupid as she felt.

“We can always say we went to visit her.”

“Not unless we really do that. Lying would only compound our problem.” Surely Noah wasn’t suggesting that they fabricate a story. She would never have expected such a thing from him.

“Of course, we’ll really visit. You can take her a pretty plant since we can’t take her any sweet treats.”

Christina mulled the idea over in her mind for a few seconds. It had potential, but...

“How do we explain the two of us being there together?” Her cheeks grew warm and probably glowed a bright red.

“That would be perfect,” Jill broke in before Noah could answer. Hope shone in her face. “My brother’s place isn’t far from the hospital. What time do you want to go?”

Christina held up a hand. “Wait a minute. We have to think about this.” She hated to burst Jill’s bubble, but she needed to figure out how this whole plan would work. She turned to Noah. “Have you thought of an answer to my question?”

“I’m working on it.”

Christina paced. Sometimes she thought better when she participated in some physical activity. In the confines of The Green Thumb, pacing would have to suffice. She felt two pairs of eyes following her movement, but she struggled to tune those out. She needed to formulate a plan fast so she could get home before her mudder sent her bruders out to search for her. She tried and discarded several ideas. “Well, Eleanore and I are freinden even though she’s a few years older. It wouldn’t be a huge stretch of the imagination to believe I would want to visit her. And I do sometimes take flowers or plants to people who are ailing. That part might work out fine.” She stopped right in front of Noah. “But how do we explain your accompanying me there?”

“Um, how about you ran into me and I decided to go with you?”

Christina wrinkled up her nose and shook her head. “That probably wouldn’t work. How would I just happen to run into you?”

Noah cracked a huge smile and snapped his fingers. “I’ve got it!”

“Let’s hear your brilliant idea.” His smile was contagious. Christina couldn’t keep her lips from curving upward. How did he have such an effect on her?

“My mudder loves to do those word searches and has tons of those little books filled with the puzzles. I think she gets one whenever she goes in the grocery store.”

Christina tapped a foot on the cement floor.
