In spite of his hesitancy to visit the graves, Christian decided to brave it out. He met Joseph and Barbara at the springhouse in the early afternoon the following Sunday. After enjoying a cool drink of water, they followed Barbara to a small cleared spot that was surrounded by weeds not far from the house. “This is the place,” she said.

Christian gazed at the spot, which gave no hint of its significance apart from the small wooden slabs that protruded from the earth. Each tipped in a different direction. Christian reached down to straighten them. They stood in silence until a crow cawed loudly, breaking the reverence of the moment.

“So … they’re all buried together?” Christian asked.

Barbara nodded. “We didn’t have time to dig three separate graves. The men dug one wide hole and buried them in a hurry, not knowing if the Indians might return. The bishop came and had a little service …”

As Christian stood listening, thinking about the family members he had lost, Barbara’s voice faded and the ground shimmered under his feet.
