Conversation

Chileans are very good at small talk and are generally socially skilled and friendly. Their sense of personal space is less defined than in many Anglo-Saxon countries, and they can be quite tactile. You may find that a new acquaintance will tap your shoulders or arms to attract your attention or reinforce a joke. Chileans are generally very proud of their country and love talking about its attractions and travel in general, although only a few can afford it. Be sensitive to your friends’ economic situation when talking about your own travels or your standard of living.

Chileans tend to feel isolated and cut off from the rest of the world. You will often hear people complaining that Chile gets any new trend or product later than everybody else. People may also express frustration with the fact that Chile has a long way to go before becoming a first-world country. However justified such self-criticism might be, avoid agreeing with it and do not make any negative comments. Also avoid controversial subjects such as Pinochet, politics, and human rights issues, unless they are introduced by Chileans themselves. These are not suitable for small talk, and some Chileans might be annoyed by yet another foreigner who feels that he or she knows better. For a safe and politically correct conversation, mirror the Chileans and inquire about the family, Chilean food and geography, wines, or the economy. You may be surprised at how quickly tactfulness and trust can shift the conversation to more interesting topics.
