E-K. Daufin is a writer who teaches at a university in Alabama. She has had a varied career: newspaper reporter, freelance journalist, part-time maid, bookstore clerk, secretary, antiracism consultant, and psychic. Her stories and poems have been published in more than a dozen magazines and journals.

One of several writers in this anthology to focus on the psychological impact of childhood hair rituals, E-K. Daufin tells us how she finally liberated herself from other people’s expectations of her and her hair. She says of her story, “I wish I could give out copies of this story in tracts like the ones evangelists give out about Jesus. I wish I could say to well-meaning but ignorant people, ‘Read this before you say anything to me about my hair or black folks’ hair or white folks’ hair. Read this before you make any assumptions about me because of my hair. . . .’ ”
