Avoiding waste

By checking storecupboards, planning your weekly menu and always shopping with a list, you are well on your way to avoiding waste in the kitchen, as well as saving money. But it's inevitable that there will be some leftovers from time to time; for example, if last-minute plans prevent you from eating a supper that has already been planned for the week. A regular check of use-by dates of ingredients in the fridge should prevent this and planning ahead will help you to use them up in quick suppers or dishes to freeze for another day.

Expiry dates

These are a major area of debate. Supermarkets are extremely strict on expiry dates and will throw out any food the moment is is 'out of date'. Once you have purchased a product, you are asked to use it within the 'use by date'. After this, you are encouraged to throw it out and start again. However, with the odd exception - and using your judgement on certain danger foods like fish and chicken - you can simply check if it's okay to use by smell, look and feel. Follow your instinct: if it smells bad, bin it.
