When you compare this â from just fifteen years ago â to the present day, you can see how fundamentally our ideas about consent, about the respect that women deserve, have advanced.
âXI
Later that summer, I heard an anecdote about Râs attitudes to women. One that I wished Iâd heard before Iâd slept with him rather than after. When I asked a colleague of Râs if he thought R was a misogynist, his immediate response was, âYes. Iâve sat with him in a group of men and heard him say, âSo what are your strategies for seducing women? Tell me your techniques.ââ A group discussion had unfolded where they had shared tips on how to get women into bed, mostly the sort that you might read in The Game and suchlike.
In that respect, R is no different from many men who have been socialized to view women in this way. CBS News grouped together a number of successful men (including film-maker Judd Apatow, astronaut Leland D. Melvin and chef Tom Colicchio) to discuss the issue.*â Mark Herzlich, an American footballer, remarked that bad attitudes to women are nurtured during adolescence: âMen are grouped together from a young age â whether itâs athletic teams or the locker rooms or fraternities â and in a collective group of men there becomes a vernacular that is negative towards women and there becomes an expectation on other men to play on an ideology of conquering women.â
Menâs rights activists (MRAs) argue that life is not easy for men. Warren Farrell, author of The Myth of Male Power, points out that while women can be reduced to âsex objectsâ, men can be caricatured as âsuccess objectsâ.*â However, I think that much of MRA aggression reflects a pain which also stems from a desire to be free from gender stereotypes as well, from the way that misogyny undermines and cages men as well as women.
In an interview for the Independent, Jack Urwin, author of Man Up: Surviving Modern Masculinity, explained that âThe fact is, a lot of men seem to feel their place in the modern world is becoming less purposeful⦠So in an attempt to claw back some sense of manliness a lot of them are perpetuating⦠a sort of overcompensating form of behaviour that has its roots in ideas of traditional masculinity â such as strength and stoicism. But because our understanding of these has become so warped and removed from context they end up just being very unhealthy ways to act.â*â
Men are far more likely to die from suicide than women.*â In the US, Canada and Britain, the worst-hit group are middle-aged men, who often suffer in greater numbers than any other age group from unemployment and divorce.*â Relationship breakdowns are more likely to drive a man to suicide because he is more isolated, whereas women may have a support network of friendships.
In the UK, 2.5 million men report having no close friends.*â Men tend to have fewer friends as they age; Professor Damien Ridge
