CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

Jared remained rooted to the earth as Sophia rode toward Dyea. His hands tingled from the touch of her body, his fingers aflame from the inadvertent discovery of large, soft breasts hidden beneath layers of clothing. He slammed his mouth shut, too late to avoid exhibiting to her the look of a moronic dunce.

Why had she hidden her identity? She was the one who had saved him on the train. Why was she angry with him? Of course, knocking her off her horse might not have endeared him to her. But why wouldn’t she allow him to express gratitude for her help? Why did she look through him, ignore him?

Jared staggered off the trail and collapsed at the base of a damaged cyprus tree. A jagged wound on the trunk next to his shoulder evidenced the brutal assault of a prospector’s axe. A revelation registered—until now she had never looked Jared in the eye. She had always averted her gaze or avoided him, despite the fact that she must have known him immediately. She had been afraid of recognition. Why? She certainly had nothing to fear from him. Embarrassment faded.

The image of her helpless on the ground brought a surge of warmth and excitement. Sophia Alverson was no longer an aloof, untouchable ice princess. She was human, no different than Jared. He may never have a chance to satisfy his desire or develop even the fragment of a relationship. Still, the feel of her body vibrated through his limbs.

That night, excited emotions overcame the usual nighttime shadows of depression and sadness. Sophia. His thoughts of her might be ridiculous fantasies. But the image of her direct gaze and the burning touch of her body remained vivid. Jared yanked off his boots and burrowed into the bedding fully clothed. He reviewed their brief encounter in unending loops, always returning to that moment when his hands wrapped around her torso, fingers on fire from the softness of her breasts.

Gusts whipped the worn canvas tent. The fabric snapped with the random wind shifts. Where the heck was Brutus? Jared had left the flaps loose for his dog’s return, but all that entered the tent was freezing air. When would his partner return from his evening rounds? Jared fiddled with his nest of blankets and bear hides. Sound sleep would evade him without the Airedale’s presence. Why couldn’t exhaustion alone allow him sweet escape into senselessness?

His body heat warmed the cocoon of covers, and images faded into darkness. The dreamy vision of the beautiful woman engulfed his consciousness. Jared again slipped his hands underneath her arms. Sophia leaned back against his chest. He lifted her upright, and increased pressure from her body thrust against him. His fingers once again sunk into sensual mounds, this time cutting through the fabric of her coat, blouse, underwear, to her silky flesh.

Her firm buttocks rubbed against Jared, up and down, again and again. A sense of urgency filled his loins. Sophia kept moving, rotating. She wouldn’t stand still or turn around, kept leaning into him, generating strange sensations.
