CHAPTER 4

The Process of Character Development

Conscience and Character Development

I use a catchy little rhyming saying at workshops. It sums up what must happen for values and standards to become firmly embedded in a person’s psyche. It also explains why so many disordered characters (especially the aggressive and narcissistic personalities) don’t form good consciences. The ditty goes like this: “Internalizing a societal prohibition is at heart an act of submission.” That’s right. Internalizing a prohibition is most fundamentally an act of submission to a higher power or authority. A person who truly accepts a principle of conduct, and actively incorporates it into their conscience, willingly subordinates his or her individual will to serve the greater good. This is the very essence of healthy conscience formation.
